This historical landmark within the grounds of Osaka Castle Park is the former military headquarters of the 4th Division of the Imperial Japanese Army, as well as the site of the former Osaka City Museum, and now, it is being transformed once again.
Take in the history and culture of and wander around the facility in search of memorable gifts and presents, or, enjoy a meal with a loved one at one of the restaurants. Venture up to the roof, and right in front of you, Osaka Castle offers a view like one you’ve never seen before.

In 1931, to commemorate Emperor Hirohito’s enthronement, Osaka Castle underwent a renewal. Using funds donated by the public (1.5 million yen at the time), the Main Tower was reconstructed, Osaka Castle Park was opened, and the military headquarters of the 4th Division of the Imperial Japanese Army was built.

Characterized by the design of the upper outer walls, the towers at the entrance as well as on its four corners, the building exterior was based on the majestic old castles of medieval Europe.

After World War II, the building was used as both the Osaka City Police Headquarters and later, the Osaka Prefectural Police Headquarters. The interior then underwent a remodeling and, between 1960 and 2001, was the site for the Osaka City Museum.
